US Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch demands to replace the Head of the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAP) Nazar Kholodnitsky. Earlier, the Head of the SAP was caught consulting corrupt officials about how to avoid punishment for their crimes.
“For the integrity of anti-corruption institutions, the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor should be replaced. Those who were caught trying to provide advice to the suspects on the subject of how to avoid responsibility on charges of corruption should not be trusted to handle these same cases,” said the US representative.
What caused her to make such a statement is unknown, although the Anti-Corruption Center and the NABU have been seeking the dismissal of Kholodnitsky for almost a year. NABU claims that Kholodnitsky leaked information about criminal cases which is evidenced by recordings made by the wiretap installed in the aquarium in his office.
Despite these pieces of evidence Qualification and Disciplinary Commission of Public Prosecutors (the Commission) issued only a reprimand to Kholodnitsky and the Security Service of Ukraine closed the case last December.
Another exacerbation of the conflict occurred because of the Tymoshenko case – the Anti-Corruption Center reported to SAP and NABU to initiate a prosecution on the basis that “Batkivshchyna” in the party reports did not indicate the work of American lobbyists. Despite the fact that NABU also didn’t open the prosecution, the complaints were mainly about SAP.
In addition, the Commission collected a selection of a dozen cases that, in their opinion, collapsed precisely because of the SAP. Activists talk about the list of cases for which they are denied access, despite requests. In order to dismiss Kholodnitsky, the Commission decision is necessary.
