This is the first meeting of a participant in the presidential election in Ukraine with the highest official of the aggressor state.
Ukrainian presidential candidate Yuriy Boyko and Chairman of the Political Council of the “For Life” party Viktor Medvedchuk arrived in Moscow to meet with Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and “Gazprom” Head Alexei Miller.
The meeting was initiated by the Ukrainian side, and its broadcast was covered by “112 Ukraine” and “NewsOne” TV channels controlled by Medvedchuk.
“We really, in our opinion, have an important reason to ask to meet with you, because the economic relations between Ukraine and Russia are extremely important for our economy. Today they are experiencing perhaps the hardest period in their history,” Boyko said at the meeting.
According to Medvedchuk, the subject of the meeting was the discussion of direct gas supplies from Russia to Ukraine at a price of 240-260 USD by 2020.
The meeting took place at the Medvedev’s residence near Moscow. Medvedev himself said that due to the “deep crisis” of bilateral relations between Ukraine and Russia, such a meeting was necessary.
According to Interfax, “Gazprom” CEO Alexey Miller said that Gazprom is ready to negotiate a direct contract for the supply of Russian gas to Ukraine. At the same time, according to the Head of the Russian gas monopoly, the Russian Federation will offer Ukraine gas for a quarter lower than world prices.
In addition, Miller and Medvedchuk stressed the need to return to the idea of creating a gas consortium based on the gas transmission system of Ukraine.
By the way, Ukraine for more than three years (from November 26, 2015) does not import natural gas from Russia, buying it exclusively from European suppliers in a reverse way. The reason for the refusal of Ukraine to buy gas was the inconsistency of the price.
Reportedly, during the meeting, the situation around the transit of Russian gas was discussed, since its term expires this year. In addition, the meeting participants discussed the prospects for access of Ukrainian goods to the Russian market.
Note that this is actually the first meeting of a participant in the presidential race with the highest representative of the power elite of the aggressor state. According to opinion polls, Yuriy Boyko takes 4-5 places in the presidential race. In his election program, this candidate declares the need to negotiate “with all parties of the conflict in Donbas”, claims that he “will overcome the tensions with all neighboring countries, including Russia,” advocates non-adherence and neutrality of Ukraine.
However, Boyko did not include fundamentally new proposals in his program voiced by one of the most influential partners in the block of Viktor Medvedchuk which are obviously common to the candidate’s team.
At the recent congress of the “For Life” party, Viktor Medvedchuk, who is the best friend of the Russian President Vladimir Putin, offered to grant Donbas autonomy status following the example of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, as part of Ukraine, with its own parliament and government. In addition, Medvedchuk repeatedly accused the Ukrainian authorities of initiating the military actions in certain areas of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions.
It is noteworthy that the Security Service of Ukraine stated that within their competence and in a short notice they will provide a legal assessment of the visit of Boyko and Medvedchuk to one of the leaders of the aggressor country and their statements.
