National Public Broadcasting Company of Ukraine (UA: PBC) states that the reason for canceling the participation is excessive politicization.
The National Public TV and Radio Company of Ukraine refused to participate in the international Eurovision Song Contest 2019.
This was reported on February 27 by the press service of b UA: PBC.
“National Selection-2019 discovered and drew public attention to the systematic issue of the music industry in Ukraine: the close connection of (Ukrainian) artists and the show business of the aggressor state (Russia) that persists despite five years of aggression,” noted in UA: PBC.
The ministry claims that for a part of society concerts and contacts with the Russian Federation are acceptable, while in another part of society this fact causes outrage and rejection.
“The laws of Ukraine do not provide any restrictions on the work of performers and artists in the Russian Federation despite a large public request to resolve this situation,” the department also noted.
“In conditions of excessive politicization during the national selection, the Public broadcaster decided to refuse to participate in the international song contest Eurovision-2019,” the UA: PBC states.
The broadcaster believes that it is necessary to conduct a public dialogue in order to formulate the positions of Ukrainians regarding this problem.
Also, UA: PBC noted that a draft law should be presented to resolve the situation with the cooperation of Ukrainian artists with Russia.
The UA: PBC stated that after the refusal of the winner of the National Selection MARUV to sign the contract, the broadcaster could choose any performer not from among the National Selection participants, but refused such an alternative and turned to other finalists.
However, the groups Freedom Jazz band and Kazka band also refused to participate in Eurovision-2019.
Ukraine for the second time refuses to participate in this international competition.
In particular, in 2015 Ukraine abandoned Eurovision because of the annexation of the Crimea and the occupation of Donbass due to the military aggression of neighboring Russia.
