Residents of occupied Donbass who will receive a passport of the Russian Federation will need to be deprived of the Ukrainian passport.
Such a statement was made by the Deputy Minister for the temporarily occupied territories, Yuri Grymchak in the comment to “Channel 5”.
“The Constitution of Ukraine states that a Ukrainian should possess only one citizenship – the citizenship of Ukraine, therefore those people who will receive citizenship of the Russian Federation may lose the citizenship of Ukraine, and I think that this will have to be done – to cancel the passports of Ukraine, foreign passports [ed. – issued in Ukraine], domestic and so on,” he said.
According to the official, issuing passports of the Russian Federation to residents of occupied Donbass will destabilize the situation and help legalize the militants.
In this case, Russia will be able to declare that it protects its citizens in Eastern Ukraine.
In addition, the presence of a passport of the Russian Federation will help to avoid criminal prosecution by Ukrainian law enforcers by officials of the occupational administration of the so-called Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics.
