Public Broadcasting interpreted singer’s actions as the potential danger of an escalation of the split in Ukrainian society.
Singer MARUV, who won the national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest in 2019, will not go to the competition from Ukraine.
This was reported by Public Broadcasting on February 25.
“After the negotiations, NOTU and singer MARUV did not achieve consensus regarding the mission of the representative of Ukraine at the international song contest,” the broadcaster said.
The ministry claims that according to the rules of “Eurovision”, the participant must “ensure a non-political nature.”
“The situation that has developed around this year’s National Selection has signs of politicization,” the report says.
“Public resonance, attempts of pressure from political forces, cultural figures and information structures of the aggressor country interfering in the discussion – all this actually led to the politicization of the results of national selection,” the Public added.
The broadcaster also sees in the situation “the danger of an escalation of the split in the Ukrainian society”.
On her Facebook page, the singer wrote that in order to participate in Eurovision 2019 she was ready to cancel the planned tour in the Russian Federation.
The second place after MARUV in the final of the national selection was taken by the Freedom Jazz band with the composition “Cupidon”.
MARUV said that the canceling of concerts in Russia was not fundamental for her.
This is stated on her Facebook page.
“As I said earlier, the canceling of concerts in Russia was not a matter of principle for us. The main disagreement was caused by other clauses, if I sign them it would be slavery for me. I am a citizen of Ukraine, I pay taxes and sincerely love Ukraine. But I’m not ready to pronounce slogans and transform my performance in the competition into the promotions of our politicians. I am a musician, not a baseball bat in the politics,” she wrote.
MARUV added that she wants to “present her art without censorship.”
“I sincerely thank and appreciate everyone who believed in me and voted. And I ask you to accept this fact and not to go for confrontation. This is a reality today. I want to present my art without censorship,” – said the singer.
At the same time, the head of Public Television Zurab Alasania spoke about the terms of the agreement for the participants of the selection for Eurovision that ensure avoidance of excessive politicization of the competition.
Among them is the refusal of the representative of Ukraine at an international competition to tour in the Russian Federation (three months after the competition) and attentive attitude to the public statements of the performer regarding the territorial integrity of Ukraine, or any statements that could harm Ukraine at the international level.
The remaining conditions, with regard to rights, for example, are the standard conditions of the competition holder, the European Broadcasting Union, Alasania notes.
“But … Not all beautiful Ukrainian performers are ready to be good cultural diplomats. Thus, the decision on the performer who will represent Ukraine in Eurovision has not yet been made. We will start negotiations with the next candidate in the morning (ed. In the morning of February 26),” added the head of Public Television.
In “Public” they said that they would choose the representative of Ukraine in the Eurovision Song Contest among all the finalists of the national selection.
This was stated by a member of the Board of the National NSTU Alexander Koltsov at the interview to “Hromadske” TV-channel.
“First we will consult with the European Broadcasting Union regarding the politicization of the selection process in Ukraine. How will this affect our participation this year? Then we talk to the lawyers if we want to continue to take part in it as a broadcaster. Then we talk to the management of artists. And then we will make a decision,” she explained. To the question whether the contract offered by MARUV differs from the document that was offered to the winners of the national selection in the past, Koltsova replied that the only thing that was new was a ban on performing in Russia.
“The fact that the artist revealed the interpretation of these points … there are just a lot of standard points from the Eurovision rules. The only exception is the point concerning the cancellation of tours in the Russian Federation – cancelation for the time of competition”- she said.
Koltsova confirmed that MARUV agreed to cancel her performances in Russia adding that this item had not been used before because the artists performing in Russia did not qualify for the final of national selection.
“In each selection, there were artists who at that time performed in the Russian Federation, none of them reached the final, so we did not apply this standard. The contract existed always, we added this point after the first semi-final, when there were real chances that we would have such a case, and it would be necessary to interpret this both for the society and outside,” Koltsova said.
She added that another candidate who wants to represent Ukraine at Eurovision will be offered the same contract, which was rejected by MARUV.
