In 2018 the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) disposed of 663 million banknotes in the total amount of 47.4 billion hryvnias.
This was reported in the press service of the NBU.
It is noted that this is less in quantity by 16.7% and in sum by 6.2% than in 2017.
The National Bank explained that the disposal of old and worn out banknotes occurs exclusively in automatic mode in the regional offices of the regulator and the Central depository located in the capital.
Banknotes are cut into small pieces and the crushed mass is collected in bags or put in a special press that makes briquettes from the shredded mass.
“That is, the destruction process is a small fraction of the grinding of banknotes, after which the shredded mass is disposed of at industrial solid waste landfills by specialized companies with which the National Bank has concluded relevant agreements,” the NBU said in a report.
